Vida Nova Recovery Appoints Medical Director
Vida Nova Recovery Centre is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Anthony Parrell as Medical Director.
This strategic expansion marks a significant milestone in the organization’s journey toward opening its doors and addressing the urgent need for comprehensive inpatient addiction services in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The province is currently facing a critical shortage of inpatient addiction treatment services, with only 29 beds available across the region.
Recent data reveals a 56.3% increase in demand over the past three years, highlighting a shortfall of more than 400 beds to adequately serve individuals currently in need.
In response, Vida Nova Recovery is committed to delivering compassionate, evidence-based inpatient care tailored to individuals struggling with substance use disorders.
The facility, located on a secluded peninsula on Southwest Pond near Holyrood, will offer a full continuum of services, including medically supervised detoxification, individualized treatment plans, a range of therapeutic modalities, and extended sober living options designed to support long-term recovery and community reintegration.
Dr. Anthony Parrell
Dr. Anthony Parrell, a University of Toronto-trained family physician with specialized expertise in addiction medicine and emergency care, brings invaluable clinical leadership to the team.
Having worked with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre’s inpatient addictions service, Dr. Parrell practices a trauma-informed, culturally safe, and harm-reduction approach to treatment.
“I joined Vida Nova because I believe in the power of compassionate, evidence-based care to change lives,” said Dr. Parrell.
“My goal is to help build a treatment model that supports clients from detox through to long-term recovery, grounded in clinical integrity, human dignity, and lasting transformation. We are building something here that has the potential to truly change the landscape of addictions care in this province.”
Together with Managing Director Melissa Wells, Dr. Parrell is assembling a multidisciplinary team of skilled and empathetic healthcare professionals, united by a shared vision to revolutionize inpatient addiction treatment in Newfoundland and Labrador.
